Chest pain in children is usually not caused by serious problems. You should call your physician if your child complains of chest pain and he is having difficulty breathing, feels as if his heart is racing or skipping beats or if he passes out.
- costochondritis, pain caused by inflammation of the chest wall. You can reproduce the pain by pushing on the area that is inflamed. Usually treated with an anti-inflammatory medicine such as ibuprofen.
- muscle strain, pain that usually follows your child starting a new sport or activity and can be made worse by certain body movements. Also treated with anti-inflammatory medicines.
- lung infections, such as pneumonia or bronchitis can cause chest pain because of the frequent coughing or because of the infection itself. See your doctor to see if antibiotics are necessary.
- heart disorder, chest pain that can be accompanied by an irregular heart rhythm or pounding, dizziness, that is made worse by exercising, and that may cause fainting. See your doctor immediately.
