Parents prepare for potty training in different ways.

Some rush to get their kids potty trained early, without giving much thought to how they are going to do it and if their children are even ready, and others use a more laid back approach and wait until their kids almost potty train themselves.

Which method is better?

It depends on you and your child.

Keep in mind that learning to use the potty is an important achievement for children, but also a very real source of frustration and problems for many families, especially those who are unprepared and have unrealistic expectations.

To help avoid these problems, a good book on potty training can be helpful. And Vicki Lansky's book, Toilet Training, A Practical Guide to Daytime and Nighttime Training, is one of my favorites.

In addition to being concise and easy to read, Vicki Lansky includes everything you need to know to successfully potty train your child.

Of course you will find the typical advice on what kind of potty chair to buy and recognizing when your child is ready to begin potty training, but there are also chapters and advice on other important topics, like:

As a bonus, the latest edition of Toilet Training includes a potty progress chart, diploma and a read-together children's book - KoKo Bear's New Potty.
