How you parent your child is important.

Although the rest of your child's environment does influence our children, parents have much more influence over their children's behavior and their overall development then they generally believe.

It is important to realize that the type of parent you are goes a long way in determining the type of person your child will become.

What is parenting?

Parenting isn't just discipline. It is also how you communicate with your children, how close your family is, how you teach your children to act and how you show your children that they are wanted and loved.

Webster's defines parenting as 'the work or skill of a parent raising a child'.

Like other skills, parenting takes time to learn how to do it effectively. Don't be afraid to look for or ask for help. Like other skills, not everyone has the same abilities. .

The other part of the definition that I would like to stress is that parenting is 'work.' It isn't usually easy. Becoming a good parent is something that many of us do have to work at.

This series of articles will focus on important parenting topics and will stress the importance of how you parent your children.

The first article, Finding What Works, discusses how to recognize when things aren't working and how to find new methods to parent your child more effectively.
