| Intussusuception occurs when one part of the small intestine moves into the part next to it, causing it to be blocked. It is most common in children between the ages of six and eighteen months and the cause is usually unknown, although it was recently associated with receiving the Rotavirus vaccine which has since been discontinued.
When it does occur, your child will quickly develop episodes of colicky abdominal pain and bilious vomiting (dark green bile). He may be normal between these episodes or he may be lethargic. If not treated, he will next develop a currant jelly colored stools. This condition is diagnosed and treated by using an air enema in the hospital. If this fails, your child may need surgery to correct it.
