Sinusitis
Although inflammation of the sinuses is very common in teens and usually accompanies an infection with a cold virus, this is not a true sinus infection and does not need antibiotics to clear up. The sinuses are very undeveloped in children under two years of age, and they are not fully developed until your child is a teenager.

A true sinus infection usually follows a cold and it is caused by bacteria. While the congestion and runny nose of a cold usually clears up in ten to fourteen days, if it persists longer than this than your child probably has a sinus infection. Other signs of sinusitis include facial pain over the sinuses, drainage in the back of the throat, persistent fever or cough, and bad breath.

Sinus infections do require antibiotics to clear up, but remember that if your child has a runny nose for less than ten to fourteen days, then it is probably caused by a cold virus and he does not need an antibiotic.
